  • WUAAG Establishes a Revolving Credit Scheme
The revolving credit scheme has been established for WUAAG members. In the past, WUAAG as a support group, has undertaken and continues to undertake a number of Income Generating Activities (IGA). Thus, members have been trained in batik making, mushroom cultivation, snail rearing, bead-work and screen printing. Members have been also trained in basic book keeping skills and thus have been equipped with enormous business skills, which we hoped would go a long way to economically empower the members. Subsequently, the members come to WUAAG three times a week to undertake these IGA and sell the products. Profits realized are divided into two. One half is recycled back into the project to ensure sustainability and the other half is given to the members as their income realized.

Realizing that profits made is not enough to enable the members meet their own needs, much more, the needs of their children and other dependents and discussing this with the members, we proposed the establishment of a revolving credit scheme, where the economic independence of members would be guaranteed as far as possible. Operating under the Grammene System, members have been divided into three groups, i.e. 20 members in each group. For this first quarter, only two groups of 20 women per group benefited. For each group, 10 women received Gh˘200.00 each. They have each invested their fund in an income generating activity of their choice and have started repaying the loan in installments. The other 10 women would only be able to receive their money after their group members have paid back their credit with interest of 10%.

Since the other members would only be able to access the credit facility after their colleagues have paid up, they have been ensuring that their group members pay up. It is expected that there would be competition among them and this would ensure compliance with respect to repayment of the loans among all members.

The interest to be accrued would be put together and given to new members or added on to initial amount received. This is to ensure the sustainability of the project. This project is also being sponsored by AWDF.
